In this scene, Pollicino ("Little Thumb" in Italian) overhears his impoverished parents' plan of leading him and his six brothers deep into the forest and of leaving them there because they no longer have the means to feed their children. They do not want to see their children starve to death in front of their eyes. Worried about what is about to happen the next day, Pollicino looks up at the sky.
